Introduction

The original idea for Second Bite was conceived in June 2019 as a direct response to the emerging gap in opportunities for individuals, who through a wide range of complexities, are at the furthest reach from employment.

Since then Second Bite has developed into a social enterprise with social value at its core. Second Bite CIC is passionate about tackling issues around food poverty and persistent poverty in local areas. We are also committed to working alongside grass roots local charities within these areas.

We also plan to continue and expand our training and education provisions and collaborations to all areas of hospitality. We currently work alongside North Tyneside charity, the Cedarwood Trust to deliver the Second Bite catering academy.

Second Bite CIC also runs a number of catering and hospitality premises, such as Second Bite Bistro located in Whitley Bay and Second Bite on the Wall in Segedunum, Wallsend - both delivering great food.

Second Bite Catering Academy

A collaboration between Second Bite CIC and The Cedarwood Trust, Second Bite Catering Academy pairs great food with great people to provide meals to those who need it. Meals purchased through Second Bite CIC contributing towards meals to feed those who cannot afford it.

The Second Bite Catering Academy consists of training and education opportunities for students based at the Second Bite Bistro and volunteering opportunities based at the Cedarwood Trust Café.

Providing internal and external catering provisions, a place to produce great food and opportunity. The programme is designed to offer precious opportunities to those who need a helping hand up – military veterans, single parents, NEET’s, people in recovery, people with complex needs, ex-offenders, and the long-term unemployed.

Each participant is given full basic training and ongoing support in basic catering & hospitality and general employment skills, with a further tiered development programme, which also offers employment opportunities through a host of different vehicles.

We also offer, uniquely – on going support with participant personal issues throughout.

"Support into, during
and after employment"

As a patron of  Second Bite CIC, it has given me great pleasure to see how the team have adapted and worked throughout the last year.  When I initially agreed to become a patron of SB,  before the pandemic began, I was incredibly positive of the role they wanted to play within the local community, and the goal towards making an impact on food poverty.  Whilst the model changed slightly due to circumstance, the team have worked incredibly hard in providing meals for the local community, whilst working on one of the original goals of the program, providing an academy to teach some of the skills that are required to work within the hospitality industry.

The generosity of many people continues to astound me, non more than those who have donated time, money and premises in order for it to continue to succeed.  I know the people concerned won’t want naming, but thank you!  Without your involvement, none of this would be possible!  The journey forwards may not always be straight forwards, but I am proud of the work that second bite is doing, and confident that it will continue to grow and adapt, and make a big difference to food poverty.

Second Bite CIC Social Value Delivery Vehicles

Increasingly, organisations are considering their activities holistically, taking account of the wider economic, social and environmental effects of their actions.

Social Value serves as an umbrella term for these broader effects, and organisations which make a conscious effort to ensure that these effects are positive can be seen as adding social value by contributing to the long-term well-being and resilience of individuals, communities and society in general. Second Bite CIC - Social Return on Investment - SROI

"We believe that to lift people out of poverty, providing opportunities to become employable to increase social networks greatly improves life when everyone has the chance to contribute. Second Bite CIC is a sustainable social enterprise designed to give people a second chance to work, contribute and bring prosperity to their community."
Wayne Dobson, Chief Executive of the Cedarwood Trust

There is increasing recognition that we need better ways to account for the social, economic and environmental value that results from our activities. The language varies – ‘impact’, ‘returns’, ‘benefit’, ‘value’ – but the questions around what sort of difference and how much of a difference we are making are the same.

Second Bite CIC can clearly demonstrate impact

Human Capital – Skills & knowledge, happiness, confidence and aspirations
Physical Capital – Wealth, eat healthy, adequate heating, moving out of poverty
Social Capital – Increased networks, peer groups, opportunities, social mobility
Cultural Capital – Knowledge, education, adjusting behaviour skills, learning

Eliminating food waste, ending food poverty

Second Bite CIC produces lots of food through the Second Bite Catering Academy and catering operations - We are committed to working collaboratively with local companies and organisations to eliminate food waste. We receive donations of food and ingredients which is then prepared and served by students of our Second Bite Catering Academy to those in need, through our partners and catering services. We’re committed to tackling the ever-increasing issue of food poverty to ensure nobody goes hungry. Working with local partners and the community, we make food available to those who need it.

The Second Bite CIC aims to put dignity and personal ownership into how people receive a free meal. Currently people access food banks and receive a week’s supply of tins and packets (which is often not the most healthy food) from which the individual takes home and ‘ready steady cooks’ the assortment.

Which is great in sufficing hunger.

However, we aim to produce freshly cooked, nutritional frozen meals that require nothing more than a microwave to prepare. Meals that an individual can select from a menu, meals that give a person back a sense of control at a time they are most vulnerable. Our plans are to scale up this approach to offer commissioned and non-commissioned services the ability to purchase meals from Second Bite and have them delivered to the organisation’s freezers for dispensing.

Dignity in Poverty

Help us in the journey to ensure no child or adult goes to bed hungry, from sponsorship, donations, and commissions.
